Beyond Disney — Orange County, California
By Coleen Bennett
Orange County California is a popular vacation destination for families, largely because it’s home to the one and only Disneyland. While Walt’s first park is not to be missed, the Disneyland Resort is good for one or two days max. Fortunately Orange County has a lot of other family friendly activities to round out a week’s vacation or more.
When you’re on vacation, you should do things that you can’t or wouldn’t do at home. The obvious attraction in Southern California is the Pacific Ocean. You definitely need to allow more than one day to enjoy it.
No Southern California vacation is complete without a day at the beach. Not all beaches are created equal. Find a beach with a lifeguard. No matter how well your kids swim, the Pacific Ocean is different from pools, lakes and rivers. Read up on rip currents and check the flag at the lifeguard tower. Bring beach toys like boogie boards, skim boards, a ball or Frisbee and sand castle toys. No matter what you think, your kids are not too old to build sand castles. No one is. If you can, find a beach that has tide pools. Go at low tide and let the kids find sea anemones, mussels, crabs and more sea creatures.
Many visitors think that surfing is only for those who have a lot of time to learn. While it’s true that you’re unlikely to catch the big one your first time out, beginners can learn enough to have fun on their first outing. Many surf schools offer group or private instruction along with use of their equipment. Kids as young as four or five can hang ten. Be sure to take photos to include with the ever popular What I Did Over Summer Vacation essay.
A lot of people think that of whale watching as a winter activity. While the whales aren’t migrating in the summer time, there’s plenty of wildlife to see off the coast. Find one of the companies that offer whale watching cruises. Their captains are familiar with all of the people-pleasing marine creatures and they know just where to find them. Dolphins are the most fun for kids. They race boats and jump out the water playfully, entertaining cruisers. Sea lions sun themselves on buoys. Many boat captains will pull up close enough to a buoy that your kids can see them up close.
In addition to its status as a tourist destination, Orange County is home to over three million people. That kind of population supports numerous sports and recreational pastimes. Orange County Kids Activities lists many local favorites. There are childrens museums, horseback riding, go-cart racing and many more opportunities to make a memorable family vacation.https://greatfamilyvacationdestinations.com/beyond-disney-orange-county-california/https://greatfamilyvacationdestinations.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/california ocean.jpghttps://greatfamilyvacationdestinations.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/california ocean-150x150.jpgCalifornia Travel - Family Vacations in Californiabeyond,California,Disney,Orange CountyBy Coleen Bennett Orange County California is a popular vacation destination for families, largely because it’s home to the one and only Disneyland.
