California is one of the best places for a family road trip adventure. Travel along any number of their good old fashioned two lane highways to explore all they have to offer.California has beautiful scenery of mountains, deserts and ocean front views, along with a scattering of retro reminders of the past. So load up the car, and pile in the kids, then head down any one of the following paths.

  • Pacific Coast Highway
  • Eastern Sierra Scenic Byway
  • Route 66
  • California Highway 49
  • Avenue of the Giants Trinity Scenic Byways

The Pacific Coast Highway

The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as CA Highway 1, runs just about the whole length of the state, from Orange County up through LA, Santa Monica, and Malibu. If a California family road trip brings to mind a picture of your car traveling along that spectacular ocean with its cliffs and sandy beaches, then this is the highway for you. Sit back, relax, and take it all in.

The Eastern Sierra Scenic Byway

The Eastern Sierra Scenic Byway stretches along the back side of the Sierra Nevada. Officially US Highway 395, it is overrun with some of the best sights California has to offer. As your family drives along, experience Mono Lake, the pine forests, the alpine lakes, and the states world famous hot springs.

Route 66

Route 66, the Mother Road, is the all-time ultimate road trip adventure. You and your family can laugh at the relics from the past, and get a totally unique feel for the history of this highway. Travel along the very same road that brought aspiring stars to Hollywood, hippies to the sunshine of California, and delivered weary victims of the dust bowl back east. Shop at the tacky gift shops, grab a bite to eat in an old timey diner, and spend a night in one of the retro motor lodges.

California Highway 49

This highway was named after those who came out west in search of gold, the old 49ers of the gold rush. California Highway 49 will take you and your family on a road trip through history. View Victorian buildings, ghost mines and towns, and Nevada City.

Avenue of the Giants

Avenue of the Giants is 32 miles of two lane road that gives one an impressive view of the largest trees on Earth. This is home to the tall sequoias that make this area so appealing.

Trinity Scenic Byways

The Trinity Scenic Byways run from Mt. Shasta to Weaverville, while passing beautiful alpine lakes, lush forests, and the Trinity Alps. Head west on California Highway 299, towards the Pacific Ocean, for even more adventure.

A key factor in making your family road trip a successful adventure is to bring along several good maps, an atlas or onboard sat nav, and a few guide books to help you find your way. Go in the summer for the beaches, festivals, and outdoor activities, but avoid the desert. Choose spring and fall if you want to avoid the crowds.
