Have you ever considered taking the kids on a trip to Chicago? If you previously only thought of Chicago as a bustling city with adult things to do, get ready for a big surprise. Plan to take the kids and it will be a fun trip for the entire family, because Chi town, or the windy city, has a multitude of things to do and see. Therefore, a trip here will be much more than just a road trip or day trip and should be planned well in advance. If time is on your side, try to gather the family around the computer for brainstorming what your family might like to do while in the city! Start with these tips, and you can’t go wrong.

1) Chicago Children’s Pass or Chicago Family Fun Pass

For great deals on the top family attractions in Chicago, check out the Chicago Family FunPass and the Chicago Children’s Pass. These are great places to start, because by obtaining a discount pass, you’ll save 30% on many attractions. Then, don’t miss the Shedd Aquarium or Adler Planetarium. The pass remains good for 30 days after use!

2) Six Flags Great America

This is a very popular destination for families. Not that this is open only from May to October, so don’t include it in your agenda if you’re making a winter trip. Obviously, roller coasters are one of the hottest attractions, but the rides don’t stop there. That’s just one way to get the kids excited and screaming for more. You’ll also find live entertainment to check out if you need a break from the chaos.

3) Navy Pier

This should always be included on your list of things to do with the kids while in Chicago. Make sure to visit the Children’s Museum and take a ride on the ferris wheel. See a movie at the IMAX theatre or play miniature golf for a little exercise too (if you’re not already worn out from too much walking).

4) Legoland

This is a must-see, especially if your kids have ever played with LEGOS. You can find LEGOLAND in the suburb of Schaumburg. Literally 30,000 square feet of fun is filled with rides, LEGO sculptures and activities that will keep your family busy for hours – particularly those aged 2-12 years old.

5) Lincoln Park Zoo

This zoo is known as one of the finest zoos worldwide! More than 3 million visitors each year come to see the wide array of animals living there. These aren’t your everyday type of animals either – you’ll see elephants, giraffes and even gorillas. The best part – IT’S FREE! Only rides and special attractions carry a small fee. There are also dining options and gift shops for those who need to get their shopping fix.

6) American Girl Dolls

This store is a must see for any child that likes dolls!. Make sure they bring their own favorite doll along to dine with in the cafe (it’s especially for that) or shop for new one. There is also a hair salon, a theatre with live musicals and even a doll hospital for treatment of “booboos”.  Kids can have their picture taken with their doll for a fake magazine cover too – talk about a souvenir.

7) Windy City Sweets

This shop is a wonderful way to conclude your trip to Chicaoland! Not only will it leave you with lingering sweets thoughts of Chicago, it will give the kids a sugar high like no other. What a sweet little candy store and also a boutique! You can find various chocolate gifts including baskets, gourmet-type chocolates, and mixes of different candies with and without nuts and fruits to boot.

These 7 ideas are among the many ways to spend your time in Chicago – why wait? Start planning now!
