Things To Do in Big Bear, California
By Joseph Miller
Not far from Los Angeles, there is a completely different world where hectic urban life can be left behind and nature can be experienced in all its glory. Big Bear has more than enough outdoor attractions to keep a family busy for an extended vacation, so the view from your cabin or hotel can be complemented by a number of excursions.
Skiing, Mountain Biking and Golfing
Bear Mountain and Snow Summit are Big Bear’s two resorts, and their proximity to each other makes enjoying both very convenient.
Skiing at Bear Mountain Resort is extraordinary, especially in the late winter when the temperature and the bright sunlight make ideal conditions for downhill and terrain skiing.
Bear Mountain’s freestyle skiing and snowboarding park provides challenges for the advanced boarder and is also a great place for the beginner and intermediate to develop their skills. There are more jumps, jibs and fun boxes than one can possibly master and the four pipes, including Southern California’s only superpipe, are praised as “awesome” by nearly every boarder that rides them.
Snow Summit is a year round outdoor center. In the winter, the downhill skiing is fantastic, and with a ten-minute shuttle to Bear Mountain you can split the family so that everyone can ski in the style and with the intensity that they prefer.
In the summer, Snow Summit becomes a destination for people to pursue their favorite non-snow sports. You can take the chair lift to the top and bike or hike down the mountain’s rugged trails. More golf-inclined folks can send the kids pursuing hillside adventures while they enjoy a round of golf on the 9-hole mountain style course over in Big Bear.
For another day of hiking or biking on mountain trails visit the Big Bear Discovery Center, where you can get maps and advice on what trails are appropriate to your ambitions. For an intimate perspective on the unique natural history of the region, join one of the naturalist led tours. Then top off a day at the center by attending a magical concert at the Discovery Center Amphitheater.
Sliding Down the Mountain in Winter and Summer
For a simulation of a bobsled experience, try the Magic Mountain Alpine Slide. You ride the chairlift to the top, and then board your own sled to descend one of two quarter-mile tracks that have enough banked turns and fast straightaways to thrill everyone. The tubing hill onsite also provides plenty of thrills and spills for kids and adults of all ages. In the summer, activities include not only the Alpine Slide but also a waterslide, go-carts and miniature golf.
Shopping, Eating and Strolling
The commercial center of Big Bear is laid-back Pine Knot Village. Shops, galleries and restaurants in the little town can be explored in winter and summer on a pleasant stroll. If you have kids with you, they will demand a stop at the North Pole Fudge Company, which has tempting ice cream as well as an abundance of fudge and other sweet treats.
You can also get your fix of sweets at Sugar Pine Bakeshop, which is close to the Magic Mountain park. After burning off calories on the mountain, you can leave your conscience at the door of this cute, old-fashioned bakery and indulge yourself with one of their fabulous cupcakes, cookies or other sugar-infused pastries.
Regardless of what you want to do, Big Bear invites you to get outside in the clean mountain air, clear your mind and have some healthy fun with your family. When are you going to get to the mountain?
