As a parent you will always be on the lookout for places to visit that have plenty to keep the kids entertained, whatever the weather. Here are five top recommendations for family orientated destinations in the UK:

Edinburgh

Voted the top UK destination for the last thirteen years, the beautiful city of Edinburgh always has plenty to see and do. For the over fives, The Real Mary King`s Close Experience is a must. Let one of their ghoulish guides take you beneath the city`s Royal Mile to explore what was once the city`s vibrant centre and listen to gruesome tales of intrigue, murder and ghostly goings-on.

Alternatively, all ages are guaranteed to find something fascinating at Camera Obscura and World of Illusions. In addition to offering breath taking views of the city, there are five floors of optical wonders where little ones will love pretending to pick up pedestrians (or squash them like flies!) from projected, moving images of Edinburgh or swapping noses and even paddling in a virtual fish tank in the Magic Gallery.

Wiltshire

Longleat Safari and Adventure Park in Wiltshire is the UK`s number one safari park and there`s no better time to visit either, as the park is currently offering 2013 tickets at 2012 prices.

Children of all ages can feed the gentle giraffes by hand, watch cheetahs run up to 70 miles per hour or laugh at the comical lemurs. Jungle Kingdom is a new, multi-million pound attraction, featuring the Jungle Express, allowing you to observe a variety of animals in their natural habitats.

You can`t visit Wiltshire without taking a trip to Stonehenge, dated from 3100BC and the result of 30 million hours of labour. The reason behind the building of Stonehenge remains a mystery, but popular theories abound about astronomy and even human sacrifice!

Cornwall

Not only is Cornwall picturesque, it is also home to the Eden Project, the world`s largest indoor rainforest. Voted the top eco visitor attraction in the UK, you`ll be in awe of the two huge enclosures or `Biomes` that house thousands of plant species from all around the world.

There`s an educational facility where you can find out, in a fun and interactive way, lots of interesting information about the work that goes on to sustain and develop this unique environment.

Then, if there`s time, why not visit the Wingz Bird and Animal Sanctuary, working to conserve rare bird species from all around the world or take a visit to the Charlestown Shipwreck Centre on the waterfront, showcasing a fascinating collection of objects collected from shipwrecks over the years.

Staffordshire

Staffordshire boasts not just one but two of the UK`s top theme parks. Firstly there`s Alton Towers, the most visited park in the UK and home to the famous Nemesis and Oblivion rides. The main park opens between 16th March   3rd November but there are many special events going on over the half term holiday and an exclusive `kids go free` Ice Age weekend from 1st – 2nd March.

Not to be beaten, Drayton Park Manor now has Europe`s 1st ever Ben 10 roller coaster ride and Thomas Land with rides to suit all the family, whatever their age.

While in Staffordshire, why not also visit the Churnet Valley Railway and take a train ride through the beautiful Staffordshire countryside, known as Little Switzerland.

London

You can`t visit the UK without staying in our buzzing capital and if you thought London wasn`t for kids, then think again!

Undoubtedly, the best way to take in the sights of London is on one of the many city tour buses, with a trained guide offering a lively commentary about key landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.

For something different, Imagine at the Southbank Centre is currently running an annual festival for children from 11-24th February with over 100 free and ticketed events.

Then, after a busy day`s sightseeing, why not catch a show at the Dominion Theatre, most famous for the amazingly popular and long running `We Will Rock You`, featuring music by rock legends, Queen.

So, visit the UK to find family friendly destinations to suit every taste and budget!
