The Isle of Wight is often seen as the perfect location for a summer or winter getaway. Those who pay too much attention to this, however, are missing out on all the island has to offer when the nights draw in and the weather turns a little chillier.

Winter on the island is a chance to witness a more tranquil island, away from the crowds which descend on the tourist traps during summer months. So for those looking for more tranquil Isle of Wight holidays, wintry walks on the island are certainly one of the best ways to go about it.

Despite only being a mere 148 square miles in size, the island has managed to squeeze in a huge 500 miles worth of paths and bridleways for the avid walker. Those who get up early can be rewarded with the crisp fresh island mornings and the rare chance to see the red squirrels in their natural habitat, unlike in mainland UK where the grey squirrel has taken over.

Being a small island, travellers can also be sure that they are never particularly far from the coast, offering well-maintained and scenic coastal paths that differ greatly between the various borders. Those walking along the northern coast, for example, can take in views across the Solent to Portsmouth and the surrounding areas; whereas the sea at the South stretches out to the horizon, uninterrupted all the way to northern France.

For those braving the winter winds by heading to the coastal areas of the island might not just benefit from quieter beaches, however. Those with their eye a little closer to the ground may also be lucky enough to find fossils dating back millions of years. Known informally as ‘Dinosaur Island’, the Isle of Wight is rich with footprints and fossils dating back millions of years; a draw which brings avid fossil hunters over the Solent every single year.

So whilst picture postcard views of the island may be the most prevalent, you shouldn’t let that stop you exploring it in the winter months, either.
